This freelance project involved designing bespoke engagement party invitations for a private client seeking a hand-drawn, intimate aesthetic. The final design balances authenticity with restraint, using loose line work and minimal composition to evoke a sense of personal touch while remaining refined and contemporary. Inspired by informal celebration and shared moments, the illustration-led approach allowed the invitation to feel both sentimental and considered, reflecting the couple’s vision for a relaxed yet stylish pre-wedding gathering.

Final Invitation Design

The invitation features a warm, neutral base paired with a soft red line illustration to create a sense of intimacy and informality. A simple, minimal layout allows the hand-drawn elements to remain the focal point, while handwritten-style typography complements the illustration and reinforces the authentic, personal feel. The playful tagline “Join us for booze before the I do’s” introduces a sense of humour and warmth, setting a relaxed, celebratory tone for the event.

The design process was highly collaborative, involving ongoing dialogue with the client to refine tone, layout, and visual direction across multiple iterations. Variations explored shifts in colour palette, hand-drawn typography, illustrative density, and typographic hierarchy to find the right balance between playfulness and clarity. Particular attention was given to the relationship between illustration and text, as well as the use of negative space to allow the design to breathe and feel considered rather than crowded. Presenting a series of alternate invitations enabled clear design communication, ensuring the final outcome responded precisely to the client’s needs while maintaining a cohesive and intentional aesthetic.
