ISTD: The Line

The Cosmic Almanac

A guide to the worlds night sky

The brief

Through thorough research and iteration of ideas complete a typographic publication which honours the concept of “the line”.

My response to the ISTD brief “The Line” explores the line as a tool for navigation, mapping movement, direction, and discovery. The publication considers the line as both a visual and conceptual structure: one that connects, divides, and guides interpretation. Through typographic pathways, rhythmic pacing, and deliberate spatial tension, the layouts echo cartographic systems and navigational markers. Structured and fragmented lines work together to lead the reader through the publication, mirroring the ways we orient ourselves within both physical and conceptual spaces.

The materiality of the publication plays a central role in conveying the concept of navigation through line. A combination of textured and translucent paper stocks creates depth and layering, allowing hand-drawn linear elements and star-mapping forms to interact across pages. The perforated holes in the front cover function as both visual constellations and light filters, projecting subtle points of light that echo the navigation theme while aligning with the spatial arrangement of the contents page. Encased within a semi-translucent envelope, the publication extends this system through a mirrored constellation pattern, creating continuity between object, content, and reader interaction, and reinforcing the idea of guided movement through the night sky.
